Dark Shadows: Movie Review

The Tim Burton-Johnny Depp partnership brought me some of my favorite movies like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. That’s why I was really rooting for this movie.

It started out just fine. Syempre madilim ang kuha, mapuputi ang mga tao, at andoon si Helena Bonham Carter (who is absolutely one of the greatest actresses pagdating sa character roles). Kaya kahit hesitant ako dahil di ako mahilig sa horror-ish at vampire movies, I agreed to watch this movie.

Yun nga lang… I didn’t know that I was up for a MAJOR disappointment.

Ang Kuwento

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet-or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles. Written by Warner Bros. Pictures

Yep at siyempre left out ang character ni Bella Heathcote as Victoria Winters and her doppelganger, Josette DuPres, kahit sa plot summary. Kahit nga sa poster ay wala siya which is weird dahil relatively malaki naman ang part niya sa movie bilang love interest ni Johnny Depp.

I won’t spoil the movie not because sayang naman, pero dahil I won’t waste precious typing it up. Maaalala ko lang kung gaano kawalang-kwenta yung kwento. Basta maraming unnecessary explosions, SOBRANG mushy ending, at dahil may vampire, may werewolf. Kelan pa naging rule ito?!

Ang Maganda

The first hour of the film was as dark and weird as any Tim Burton movie.

Ang Pangit

The rest of the movie.

The Verdict

It’s not worth the money to see this film at the movie house. If you want a Johnny Depp fix, go ahead and watch it, but get a DVD. Watch it with your friends para may kausap ka habang nagrereklamo ka sa kung gaano ka-pointless ito.

I felt so betrayed after watching this na kinailangan kong manood ng isa pang movie para banlawan ang utak ko. I’m really sorry, but I have nothing good to say about this movie except that the actors and actresses were good. The story was so uninspired that I wanted my money back. So, if you still hadn’t seen this, great job. You made the right choice.
