One More Try: Movie Review

Sa totoo lang, di ako eager to go and see this movie.

I wanted this to be a good film at with the few Pinoy movies na maganda this year like I Do Bidoo Bidoo and The Mistress, I wished na maganda talaga ito. At halos dalawang oras nga akong apektado habang nanonood. Pero I walked out with conflicting emotions and thoughts about the movie.

Ang Kuwento:

Again, we’re back to the theme of women tearing couples apart.

Ang difference lang is that instead of the usual 4-character problem as was with The Mistress and with selfish romantic love/lust as the driving force for this mistake, the story revolves around one kid.

Grace (Angel Locsin) kept her kid a secret from Edward (Dingdong Dantes) for almost 6 years dahil ayaw nitong manggulo sa tahimik niyang buhay with his wife, Jacq (Angelica Panganiban). Kaso, her son is very sick and his doctor/ninang (Carmina Villaroel-Legaspi) has been pushing Grace to make a way for Botchok to undergo a bone marrow transplant. At dahil di sila match for him, she has no other choice but to get Edward involved.

From Baguio, she travels to Manila to reintroduce herself and introduce her son to Edward’s life. Syempre may complications dito dahil happily married (or so it seemed) si Edward with Jacq. And when it seems like they’ve exhausted all their options in dahil di match si Edward and they cannot conceive a new child through in vitro fertilization, they’re forced to make a decision that will compromise part of who they all are.

Tristan risks losing Grace, Grace loses herself in a desperate effort to save her child, Jacq risks losing Edward, and Edward puts his marriage on the line for the chance to have a family.

Ang Maganda

1. Siyempre, #1 si Ms. Angel Locsin! Literal na maganda talaga siya, alam ko. Pero di yun ang dahilan kung bakit nag-stand out siya for me. I’ve seen most of her movies (dahil fan na ako since Click) pero dito siya pinakamahusay ever. Napa-buntong hininga ako just now remembering how real she was in this film. The viewers have to love her, hate her, feel sorry for her, and be in awe of Grace all at the same time.

Most young actresses lack the depth to achieve what this role demands dahil they get stuck sa layunin to cry in every scene. Others hesitate to bawl their eyes out and scrunch up their faces as normal people would when we cry dahil natatakot sila na may mag-screenshot ng frame at gamitin silang 9gag meme kaya di lumalalim. Angel managed to throw these hindrances away. Pero the bottomline is, I can name a couple hundred actresses (old and new) who can never do what she did for this movie.

2. The screenplay. Gone are the days when they dream up characters na parang literal na hinugot mo sa panaginip pagdating sa kaimposiblehan ng sketch.

The film takes us on a guided tour to raw humanity habang hinahabi ang kwento ng mga tauhan nito.

3. The direction. There are scenes in the movie na gusto kong inote down dahil ayokong makalimutan. Here are a few of them:

  • Yung eksena kung saan pinakilala ni Grace si Botchok sa ama nito. There was this shot kung saan paglapit ng bata kay Edward ay lumingon palayo si Grace sabay switch ng focus ng camera.
  • Yung pagtatalo ng mag-asawa after Jacq walked out of the doctor’s office. Syempre naman e pareho naman silang may reason.
  • Nung Edward left Grace in bed doon sa hotel, that last shot of Grace in bed.
  • Grace’s walk of shame straight to the arms of her child. Ay grabe! WASAK ako dito sa eksenang ito. Walang dialogue, pero nagsusumigaw yung emosyon.
  • Yung fight scene nila Grace at Jacq. Oo!

4. The rest of the cast. Siguro most of the credit belongs to the character she plays, pero di mo naman maihihiwalay yung actress sa role basta-basta. Oo. Bakit? Kasi nagmumukha siyang makasarili gayong sinusubukan niya namang magpakabait. She’s obviously struggling with making the right choices at constantly pinupush siya sa limits niya.

The boys were good, di lang nga kasing galing nung dalawang girls sa pananaw ko. Solid ang performance ni Dingdong at mahusay si Zanjoe considering na lumuluha siya ng walang oras at linya to build up sa marami sa kaniyang eksena. Medyo kakatwa (as in strange, not funny) lang na tuwing nag-ccut to Zanjoe crying ay sabay-sabay na tumatawa ang mga tao sa sinehan. Oo. Tumatawa sila ng malakas at contagious.

The little boy who played Botchok was also great. Not Xyriel or Zaijan great dahil ibang klase talaga ang mga batang yun when it comes to being artistically mature for their age. Tama lang yung pagpili sa bata dahil the role asked for a child.

Uh, oh! Hehe… Please hear me out bago niyo ako ibash sa comments section. I get how many viewers will love this movie ng buong-buo. Ano yun?

Yung pangangailangan ni Grace at ni Edward na bumuo ng kapatid “the natural way” does not make sense for me. Bakit? Kasi marami namang options when it comes to science helping sa proseso ng conception. What I’m saying is that there are better ways to write this problem into the story. They weren’t even working against a deadline.

If I had the privilege to lend part of my brain sa paggawa ng kwentong ito, I will suggest one thing na pwedeng maging solusyon. Di ko gagawing filthy rich sina Jacq at Edward. Dapat saktong yaman lang. Ibig sabihin, they have enough money to live comfortably and a little extra to pay for Botchok’s treatment, pero not enough to keep paying for in vitro. Tipong nasa Class B or Upper C lang sila. Wag naman A.

Nandun na tayo sa fact na mahal ang bayad doon, so work that fact. Choosing this as an storyline adds to Jacq’s dilemma dahil nauubos ang hard-earned money niya (that she could’ve used for in vitro herself) to save someone else’s baby. This would also strengthen the back story kung saan pinili ni Jacq na magtrabaho while pregnant dahil gusto niya ng masaganang buhay para sa anak niya. Kasi nga di naman sila sobrang yaman. At dahil nauubos na ang resources, they will be left with only one option. That is, to do it the natural and cheaper way. And to that, instead of “Ang pera natin di basta bastang mauubos, pero ako kaunting-kaunti nalang!” as Jacq’s lash out, she can say something like, “Lahat ng pera kaya kong ibigay at naibigay ko na, pero ikaw, hindi. Hindi na uli.”

I also hated the ending. Yup. It’s just that I want a realistic ending. Pero siguro, a realistic ending did not play well with focus groups dahil pasko nga naman at people want to leave nang masaya sila kaya di yun ang nangyari. Kaya lang, sa sobrang bigat at difficult ng movie na ito, yung biglaang switch to scenes straight out of a Hallmark ad as the ending looked very pilit. I really didn’t like it. Buti nalang, my twin sister suggested that I just forget the last few seconds and think of Edward, Grace, and Jacq’s last conversation as the last shot. That worked for me.

Ang Paghuhusga

Kung bibigyan ko ito ng score from 1-10 with 10 being the highest, I’ll give it 8. 1 point off dahil sa in vitro thingamajig and another because of the ending.

Pero gayunman, solid parin ang pelikulang ito. I am still in awe of Angel and Angelica. Zanjoe and Dingdong earned my respect. It still gripped my heart. So, it’s well worth your money.

  1. nice review and nice suggestions to make the story more realistic, but to review a certain movie. set a side being a fan of one of the stars para hndi ka bias i think that is a good reviewer you review tha movie and the portrayal ng mga artista sa character nila base on what you really feel hindi dahil fan ka ng isang bida sa movie i think mas magiging effective movie reviewer ka kung ganun.. thank you nice review though..

    • First of all, thank you for reading and taking the time to comment on my post. I appreciate your thoughts, but I disagree.
I don’t think that my being an Angel Locsin fan affected my opinions significantly enough for me to lose my credibility. Whenever I write a review, I do my best to be as objective about it as possible. Marunong naman ako to set my own preferences aside. I implore you to read my older posts. You’ll see that I do not distinguish between stars I like and don’t. What matters more is kung maganda ang pagganap nila sa pelikula.
I started this blog to keep track of what I think and how I feel about movies I see. Bonus nalang if people agree with me.

  2. one more thing nawawala kasi ang cridibility mo as a movie reviewer kung sasabihin mo na fan ka ng isang artista review his or her movie focus on the movie the character cinematography musical sore customes ng mga artista every detail kasi you get lost if you review and get excite because your a fan thank you..

    • I think conducting a movie review requires nothing more than an ability to view the movie and form an opinion. It’s not like the writer is a judge for a film festival or an award-giving body. If that was the case, complete neutrality is essential. The blogosphere is a place for anyone (fans and cynics alike) to voice out their opinions. By the way, your comment cannot be understood as typed. Please check your spelling and grammar, and try commenting again. :) Peace.

    • Again, I disagree. I may like Angel Locsin, but had her performance been disappointing, I still would’ve said so. In fact, I put actresses I like against a higher bar than those I don’t.
Besides, if ang maiiwan lang to review movies (or anything else) are people who have absolutely no preference, sino ang matitira? Nobody can talk about what they appreciate and don’t without being affected by their personal preferences. Kaya mo nga nagustuhan kasi gusto mo, di ba? I’m just being honest about mine and I won’t apologize for that.
I think people who criticize anything without being honest to their readers about their predispositions are liars posing as educated critics. I refuse to be one of them.

      • ang gsto ko lang iparating kung magrereiew ka ng movie try not to say your a fan ng isang artista na kasali sa movie na ni rereview mo kasi nagiging bias ka coz ur a fan

      • ayan nanalo si dingdong dantes as best actor but base sa review mo mas angat mas standout dalawang babae specially angel locsin pero si dingdong standout din pala! lol

  3. i havent seen the movie ito opinio ko lang po . about sa pagbuo ng baby ”the natural way” kasi yan ang second option nila kasi ang IVF may possibility na di magwork . so sa movie baka di nagwork ang IVF kaya kelangan ung natural na pagbu2ntis . at un nman na sinasabi mo na sa science marami nmang paraan, un ang nsa story nila ivf and the natural way lang kaya khit may marami pang paraan yan ang story . saka di rin 100% sure ang IVF there’s possibility na di maging normal ang baby kahit sa mga iba pang science ways .

    • True. True. Valid point yung complications ng IVF. That’s why I was thinking of sperm implant instead of the entire test tube baby procedure. There are better ways naman than having Edward and Grace go through the very emotional and spiritual process of actual copulation. Kaya they have to push it more.

  4. Naaahhh.. good ending nga bro.. Here, they will discover that a true Filipino family stays together. They go through a crisis and survive that crisis together and they become better people after.

    • I’m all for Edward’s family staying together. That’s why I think it should’ve ended when Grace came to visit them. :)

  5. Your description of scenes made me really cry. I will surely watch this movie, thanks for the good review. You will make a very good storyteller.

  6. sa nag review i don’t know if you are familiar with the Chinese movie In Love We trust and My Sister’s keeper… yap wala ng original ngayon…but in the case of One More Try i’d say it’s more realistic and heartfelt. Siguro bago mo punahin ang story line nito, kindly try to do some research about In Vitro and natural concepcion…In vitro is the last option for those couples or women who can’t concieve naturally, it is not recommended to women who are healthy and able to concieve naturally unless you are single and no plans of having a partner in life or a lesbian (in the case of Jody Foster). In Vitro is not always 100% viable even if done to perfectly healthy women. There are certain medical phenomenas that even medical experts cannot explain why it did not materialize. Now, why would Grace risk the opportunity of being impragnated by the man who once loved her if there is a chance that In Vitro will not work. As a woman and a mother, i would do the same as Grace did, i will beg, do anything to save my child even if it means I am already being selfish . Sometimes, in desperation a woman can do so much to protect her child, even if she becomes immoral just to lengthen the life of her only son and that is the reality.

    • Dito na papasok yung difference in values. Look, I believe I know enough about in vitro. I know that it’s not for people who can conceive naturally. Syempre mas magandang option talaga yung natural way. Pero if icoconsider yung fact that Edward is married to someone else at di nalang silang dalawa ang apektado sa sitwasyon at kung idadagdag na mayaman naman sila Jacq, bakit mo pa pipiliin ang natural copulation over in vitro? O kaya wag na in vitro. Sperm implant nalang. It’s basically the same thing as natural copulation.
I get how desperate Grace is and appreciate how far she’s willing to go to save her child. What I was against was the fact that the way it was written in unrealistically taints that supposedly unselfish act.
Kung sperm implant lang naman ang usapan edi gawin nila everyday with an injection, it’s cheaper than in vitro money-wise and less hurtful for everyone.

Unlimited yan.
I want an open discussion na healthy para sa utak. Please help me understand what you’re trying to say as objectively as possible by minimizing the language errors. I’m not putting you down, ha? I’m just encouraging you to use our rich language to its fullest.
    Maraming salamat po.

  8. I must say…. hmmm.. magaling ka :D…. Yan din ang naisip ko the time Im watching the movie. they keep on insisting they don’t have time pero they are waiting to wait 9 months or more para makabuo ng bata.. right?? Your suggestion na dapat nasa Class B or Upper class C lang ang status ng mag-asawa is a really a brilliant idea for me.. bakit kaya di nila naisip yon.. and the line you suggested…. i must say its perfect.. saktong sakto.. mas magiging effective pa yung line kung sakali.. I SO LOVED THE REVIEW… :D for this reason.. i will follow na your blog.. :D

  9. isa sa magandang review na nabasa ko and true in every sense.i was also thinking that way.bakit kailangan nila gawin un kng meron nmn tlgang option,to think mayaman cla db?un ang loophole ng story na nakalimutan nila.i truly admire angel, shes a beauty, sexy and good natured. compared sa acting nya nun teens pa cia, lalong lumallalim ang pg arte nya habang tumatagl.some of the lines were also great.kudos to the team.sana laging ganyan ang mga pelikulang PILIPINO.they deserve an award!

  10. Ang galing mo namn mag movie review, perfect, even dun sa mga scene at camera angle napapansin mo which means magaling ka talagang viewer, at matalino, napanood ko rin yung One More Try, pinakamaganda sa 3 entries na napanood ko yung dalawa SRR at THE STRANGERS medyo na dissappoint ako.yung iba intayin ko na lng sa DVD.
Sana yung LES MISERABLES i review mo rin bago ko panoorin, he,he,he alam mo bang mahilig akong mag basa ng ng moview reviews doon kc ako nakakakita ng mga magagandang movies like ROTTEN TOMATOES at ngayon yung blog mo.

    • Salamat, Albert.
Thank you for appreciating the effort I put in.
I will write a review about Les Mis as soon as I watch it. :-)

  11. ang galing galing mong mg review.. what you”re saying is exactly the feeling and the questions i have in mind pagkatapos kong mapanood ang movie. the movie is nice, moving ang istorya at pagganap ng mga artista, pero para sa mga may alam, para sa mga nag iisip, mkikita mo talaga na marami ang loopholes lalo na sa panahon natin ngayon na sobrang layu na ang narating ng science. i like what you’re saying and your ideas. im very hapi na nabasa ko ung review mo. God bless and more power!
